Littmann Stethoscope Engraving: Cost, Ideas, and the One Thing It Cannot Do

And here is the one thing engraving cannot do: change how your stethoscope looks. The text is a few millimeters tall and invisible from three feet away. Most people who search for engraving are really looking for personalization, and engraving is only half of that. It marks your stethoscope as yours. It does not make it look like yours. This guide covers both halves honestly, including plenty of options we do not sell.

What stethoscope engraving actually is

Stethoscope engraving is laser etching on the metal chestpiece, almost always on the back or the edge. One major dealer, MyStethoscope, engraves the metal chestpiece only and explicitly will not touch the tubing. Redding Medical is the exception we could verify: they offer tubing engraving in addition to chestpiece engraving, plus engraved ID tags as a removable alternative.

Because the engraving is a surface marking on metal, it never touches the diaphragm or the acoustic path, so the sound of your stethoscope is unaffected. Most engravers are text only: letters, numbers, and standard punctuation. MyStethoscope states plainly that emoji are not an option, while Medisave offers a symbol library that includes hearts, Greek letters, and medical symbols, plus three fonts (Roboto, Indie Flower, Source Serif).

One piece of context before the prices: engraving is identification, and identification has existed for as long as stethoscopes have. Visible personalization for the Littmann Classic III, meaning colored replacement parts, is a much newer category, and most searchers have simply never seen it. That is why engraving is the only thing that comes up when you search. We will get to the other half further down.

What it costs in 2026: verified prices

All prices below were verified in July 2026 and vary by dealer. One thing to be clear about up front: we are an aftermarket color parts company, not an engraving vendor, and we do not offer this service. These are simply the honest numbers.

The pattern: at purchase from an authorized dealer, engraving is a roughly $10 to $13 add-on. Mailing in a stethoscope you already own costs about $23 in fees plus shipping in both directions. Hand engraving is the premium route at about $45. Digital models are a special case: Eko engraves the Littmann CORE and Eko models at order time only, so if you already own one, engraving through Eko is not an option.

Does Littmann engrave stethoscopes?

No, and that is the most common assumption worth correcting. 3M does not sell stethoscopes directly, and littmann.com offers no engraving option. Littmann's own site routes every buyer to authorized dealers, and it warns explicitly about counterfeit stethoscopes, which is itself a good reason to buy from an authorized dealer rather than a random marketplace listing. Every Littmann stethoscope engraving route below runs through a dealer, not through Littmann itself.

Where to get a Littmann stethoscope engraved

• Route 1, buying new: add engraving at checkout from an authorized dealer. Baron Medical ($9.99), SurgoMed ($11.95), and Stethoscope.com ($12.95) all engrave in-house, and buying from an authorized dealer also protects you from the counterfeits Littmann warns about.
• Route 2, you already own it: mail-in services. Medisave (about $23 in fees plus shipping, back out the door within 24 hours of arrival) and Redding Medical both engrave stethoscopes bought elsewhere. Use tracked, insured shipping: dealers are not responsible for inbound packages that never arrive.
• Route 3, local: many jewelry stores and trophy shops will engrave a chestpiece for a small fee, with no shipping at all. Ask them to confirm placement on the back of the chestpiece before they start.
• Route 4, marketplaces: Etsy results for engraved stethoscopes are overwhelmingly engraved ID tags and charms that hang on the tubing, not engraving of the stethoscope itself. That is a legitimate option if you want identification you can remove or move to a new stethoscope later.

What to engrave: ideas that fit the character limit

Start with the character budget, because it decides everything. Limits run from 14 characters at Eko to 20 or 25 at most dealers, and one retailer, Steeles, says 21 characters or fewer including periods and spaces fits best. For perspective: "Jessica Martinez BSN RN" is already 23 characters. Decide what actually matters before you fall in love with a quote.

Name plus credentials is the classic, and it always fits if you abbreviate the first name:

The real pros of engraving

Engraving earns its place. Here is what it genuinely does well:

• Permanent. It never falls off, never fades, and survives every shift and every wipe-down, which is more than any tag or charm can claim.
• Cheap. At $9.99 to $12.95, it is the least expensive permanent personalization that exists for a stethoscope.
• Professional. A name and credentials on the chestpiece reads as clinical. It is appropriate in any unit culture, including the ones that side-eye decoration.
• Ownership proof. When two identical black Classic IIIs are sitting on the counter, the engraving settles the "that one is mine" conversation instantly.
• Return aid. A finder who wants to return your stethoscope can, especially if you engraved a phone number. Be honest with yourself about the mechanism, though: this works on goodwill, not deterrence.

On the warranty question: authorized dealers state that laser engraving does not affect the Littmann manufacturer warranty, and that is the whole story in one line. Confirm with your dealer before ordering.

The one thing engraving cannot do

The nurses of allnurses have run this experiment for years, and the paraphrased consensus is blunt. One nurse lost two stethoscopes engraved with her full name; the community's reply was that they were not lost at all, they simply walked away around someone else's neck. Another had her initials engraved on the back of the chestpiece and it was still taken. The recurring point in those threads is that engraving only helps if someone can get close enough to read it. The happiest story we found was not even a stethoscope: a pair of engraved bandage scissors turned up two years later in a director of nursing's desk and made it home because of the engraved maiden name. Engraving got them returned. It did not keep them from disappearing.

So here are the honest mechanics. Engraving helps honest people return your stethoscope, and it helps you claim it. It does not deter theft, and it does not help you find it.
