Classic III or Cardiology IV? The quickest tell
These two get confused the most, because both are dual-sided. The Cardiology IV is the heavier, chunkier instrument, noticeably more substantial in your hand, and it is what most people are issued in cardiology or critical care. The Classic III is the everyday Littmann most nurses and students carry, lighter and slimmer. What the serial number can and cannot tell you

Some Littmann stethoscopes carry a serial number, and people often assume it decodes the model. In practice it is not a useful identification tool for an owner: there is no public lookup that turns a serial into a model name. What a serial is genuinely useful for is warranty and service questions, and for those, Littmann's own customer support is the right place to ask. Do color kits fit the Cardiology IV?
No. Every part we sell is sized for the Littmann Classic III only. If you own a Cardiology IV or another model, tell us on our identification page and we will let you know when a kit for your model exists.
Will changing my tubing affect the sound?
No. The chestpiece and diaphragm do all the acoustic work, and they never come off during a swap. You are only replacing the flexible tubing, rings, and ear tips, so your Classic III performs exactly as it did before.
Can I identify someone else's Littmann from a photo? (buying a gift)
Usually, yes. Find any photo where the stethoscope appears, zoom in on the round metal chestpiece, and read the engraving: the model name is stamped there. Too blurry?
